Dr. Emilio Mateo

Dr. Emilio Mateo joined the Pacific Institute in 2024. Emilio’s prior projects were related to mountain hydrology, climate resilience and adaptation, and communicating the findings from these projects to the broader scientific community and the public to inform actions. His research interests include water resource management, hydrometeorological processes in alpine regions, and science communication and outreach.

During his graduate studies, Emilio examined changes in glacial water resources through statistical, chemical, and spatial perspectives in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado and in the Cordillera Blanca, Peru. He has also worked in educational and resource management roles at multiple National Parks through programs led by the Student Conservation Association and AmeriCorps. Outside of Pacific Institute, Emilio enjoys nearly any activity that will get him outdoors including racing Ironman triathlons, skiing, trail running, and playing hockey.

He holds a BS in Environmental Science and Statistics from University of Michigan, an MA in Geography from University of Denver, and a PhD in Geography from The Ohio State University.
