Strategic Plan Launch

Pacific Institute Launches Ambitious New Strategic Plan

The new strategic plan aims to accelerate water resilience solutions across public, private, and non-profit sectors. Running through 2026, the plan supports the Pacific Institute’s 2030 goal to “catalyze the transformation to water resilience in the face of climate change.” It focuses on four Impact Areas to accelerate action: Water Equity, Water Efficiency and Reuse, Nature-Based Solutions, and Corporate Water Stewardship.

Law & Policy Launch

New Report Reveals Existing Laws and Policies Fail to Protect Water and Sanitation Systems from Climate Change Impacts in Frontline Communities across the US

Launched by the Pacific Institute and Center for Water Security and Cooperation, this report examines federal, Tribal, state and local laws and policies governing centralized drinking water and wastewater systems, as well as decentralized onsite drinking water and sanitation systems. The report identifies shortcomings, gaps, and strengths in existing laws and policies that either hinder or enable the anticipation of and management of climate change impacts on water availability, infrastructure design, location, and operation, and drinking water quality for frontline communities in the US.

Water Conflict Chronology

New Water Conflict Chronology Update Finds 2023 Was a Record Year for Violence Over Water Resources Across the Globe

Water resources and water infrastructure are not only triggers of conflict—they can be casualties of conflict or used as weapons as well. New study from the Pacific Institute shows rapid growth in water as a trigger, weapon, and casualty of violence, with a dramatic jump in 2023 incidents

Stormwater LA Schools

New Pacific Institute Report Finds Significant Potential to Advance Green Schoolyards through Stormwater Capture in LA County

This report reveals that the total stormwater runoff generated from LA County public school campuses is approximately 3.15 billion gallons (9,510 acre-feet) per year. Of this amount, about 2.04 billion gallons (6,190 acre-feet) per year could potentially be captured to augment water supplies and green school campuses.

IAR Launch

New Report Outlines Growing Dangers of Climate Change for Water and Wastewater Systems in Rural Communities Across the US

This report, in partnership with LiKEN and RCAP, introduces an innovative community-centered framework to assist leaders in rural communities to build equitable water and wastewater systems resilient to climate change in the future. It also explores ways to nurture community-centered climate resilience in an era of mounting water crises and highlights these issues in the Southwest and Central Appalachia regions where a concentration of homes lack access to water and sanitation services.

What We Do

The Pacific Institute is catalyzing the transformation to water resilience in the face of climate change by 2030. Our work aims to ensure people, nature, and economies have the water they need to thrive. We’re focused on four Impact Areas with outsized potential for accelerating action.

Our work addresses climate impacts on access to water and sanitation, as well as livelihoods and well–being for frontline communities in the United States and around the world.

Our work is at the forefront of evaluating water efficiency and reuse possibilities, driving innovation and scaling proven circular water approaches.

Our work focuses on scaling uptake of nature-based solutions that support more climate-resilient water systems and the communities they support.

Our work engages and convenes the private sector to build water resilience in business operations and across entire supply chains. We also drive collective action in the world’s most water-stressed regions.

Why We Do It

2.2 Billion People

MORE THAN 2.2 BILLION PEOPLE GLOBALLY LACK ACCESS TO SAFELY MANAGED DRINKING WATER.1

90% of Disasters

WATER-RELATED DISASTERS REPRESENT 90 PERCENT OF ALL NATURAL DISASTERS ON EARTH.2

$1 Trillion

Annual investment of $1 trillion is needed globally to sustainably manage water by 2030.3

The need has never been greater. For 35 years, we have provided trusted science-based research, recommended feasible policy and practice solutions, and convened diverse stakeholders —from frontline communities and water utilities to Fortune 500 companies and governments —to advance solutions for the world’s most urgent water challenges. From the Colorado River Basin of the drought-prone US West to the world stage at the UN Climate Change Conference in Egypt, decision-makers turn to the Pacific Institute for science-backed leadership on water resilience now more than ever.

Collaboration is core to the Pacific Institute’s approach. We build cross-sector alliances to tackle complex water challenges.
