Accounting for Nature

The Accounting for Nature Program emerged as the private sector has increasingly sought to incorporate nature-based solutions (NBS) into operations and their portfolio of investments to address their immediate operational risks and in part to help support social and environmental challenges in the basins where they operate or have critical supply-chain elements. This work now extends to the public sector and supports efforts to implement NBS in equitable ways and to address rural and urban priorities.

Nature-based solutions protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified watersheds to address societal and environmental challenges. Investments in NBS can help restore degraded watersheds and protect intact ones, leading to improved water quality and quantity, enhanced carbon sequestration, and increased biodiversity, among many other social and economic benefits.
