Meet Our Intern Madeline Gorchels

Madeline joined the Pacific Institute this summer as an intern. At the Institute, she works on the Multi-Benefits Framework, which she says is exciting because it “focuses on bringing together diverse stakeholders for water management projects.”

Madeline says she appreciates the Pacific Institute’s international scope, but also it’s simultaneous focus on domestic water issues. “Water uniquely connects people to the environment, but clean drinking water is largely taken for granted in developed countries. The Pacific Institute’s work on water management crises domestically and internationally highlights how everyone needs to come together to protect their communities’ water,” explains Madeline. “Especially as climate change affects water resource reliability, the Institute’s water equity work will be crucial for bringing environmental investment to places most in need of water resilience.”

Growing up in the wet Pacific Northwest, Madeline says she has always had an appreciation for the importance of water in both natural and urban ecosystems. She researched aquatic ecology at Wellesley College before deciding to pursue more applied work at the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management, where she currently specializes in Water Resource Management and Environmental Data Science. Through her work in water management and data science, she says she hopes to “identify areas in need of environmental investment and improve their resilience and pollution burdens.”

When resting her brain, Madeline creates her own vegetarian recipes, goes on long walks with NPR podcasts, and knits.
