Hard Lessons at the Salton Sea

“Four years after the Imperial Irrigation District’s threats and three full years after the newest round of state promises, we’re still waiting for California to act at the Salton Sea,” writes Michael Cohen in this Desert Sun op-ed. The sea’s deterioration imperils migrating birds, while toxic dust blowing from its exposed surface threatens the health of more than half a million Californians. Cohen suggests measures to ensure state accountability for habitat and dust-control projects at the dwindling sea.

California’s Salton Sea: Management Program Update
Last month, we wrote that in September, the California State Water Resources Control Board would hear an update on the status of the Natural Resources Agency’s
Salton Sea Management Program and its progress toward meeting the requirement to construct 500 acres of habitat and dust control projects by the end of this year. These projects are crucial for the health of local
ecosystems and the
communities surrounding the sea. This
update has been delayed until October 16th.

Meet Our Fall Communications Intern Conner Smith
Conner Smith joined the Pacific Institute in September. After spending the past year working on environmental issues in the Caribbean, he says he is excited to dive into water resource issues in the West, among other topics. At the Institute, he will be helping promote research and events through social media and other communications tools.
