Meet Our Spring Communications Intern Sophia Chupein

Sophia Chupein joined the Pacific Institute in the spring of 2020 as a Communications Intern. She assists with social media and the Pacific Institute website.

Sophia says she enjoys “spreading the word about the Pacific Institute’s work and making important research accessible to anyone who’s interested.” She also appreciates the Institute’s interdisciplinary approach, which she says she believes is critical to creating meaningful change. “Environmental problems often stem from multiple causes, so they require a multifaceted approach to solutions,” she says. Sophia says one of the aspects of the communications internship she has enjoyed most is “learning about the possible solutions to both citywide and global water conflict issues. Especially in developed nations, it can sometimes be easy to forget that we are intrinsically dependent on our environment, and that we need to ensure that the limited resources we have are accessible to everyone,” she explains.

Sophia is an undergraduate environmental studies major at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She says that after this internship, she hopes to further explore “the impact that communications has on public environmental discourse.” She says she is particularly interested in environmental justice issues and hopes to work in the non-profit sector in the future.

In her spare time, Sophia enjoys reading, traveling, and making music.
