Community Strategies for Sustainability
and Justice
The Community Strategies for Sustainability and Justice Program
(CSSJ) works to build power in low-income neighborhoods and communities of color in the San Francisco Bay Area to improve economic and environmental health.
We believe that the common root causes of economic, environmental, and community health challenges in low-income neighborhoods must be overcome with innovative, cross-cutting strategies developed by impacted residents.
Since its launch in 1995, the CSSJ Program has completed five major research publications which have led to and supported numerous victories for community environmental health, including: the shut-down of a West Oakland yeast facility that egregiously violated legal pollution limits for years; the creation of a truck route to get cargo trucks off residential streets; and the successful petitioning of the City of Richmond City Council to invest resources into exploring biodiesel alternatives for local fleets.
Current research topics and projects:
Sustainable and Just Freight Transportation
West County Neighborhood Indicators Project
Environmental Health and Justice Leadership Development
Ditching Dirty Diesel
