Stormwater Capture in California, UN SDG 6 Report Released, and More

New Release: Report on Stormwater Capture Opportunities in California
 
Traditionally managed to mitigate flooding and protect water quality, stormwater has gained recent attention as a valuable local water supply option in water-stressed areas. A new reportpublished today by the Pacific Institute, explores effective programs and initiatives in California communities and in other states, and includes recommendations to overcome obstacles and expand stormwater capture in California.

California Commits to Using Less Water
 

Bills signed by California Governor Jerry Brown on June 1 create a new, more equitable framework for setting customized long-term water use targets for urban water suppliers and improving water management and drought planning. The Pacific Institute, along with a coalition of partners, actively engaged in the legislative process, providing concrete recommendations to make these bills more meaningful and impactful.

United Nations SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation Released 
 
The United Nations has released its SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation. The report explores the global status of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 on water and sanitation access, and looks at the linkages between water and the other SDGs. The United Nations Global Compact’s CEO Water Mandate, which the Pacific Institute is co-secretariat for, contributed to the report as part of the UN-Water Task Force. UN-Water is currently collecting feedback on the report.

Peter Gleick Awarded Honorary Degree by Presidio Graduate School
 

On June 2, President Emeritus Peter Gleick delivered the commencement address at the Presidio Graduate School in San Francisco, where he was awarded an honorary degree. Dr. Gleick discussed the need for new voices in the field of business and sustainability, and the vital role businesses can play in supporting sustainability.

In USAID Redesign, Water is Grouped with Food and Climate
Update from Circle of Blue, an Affiliate of the Pacific Institute
Brett Walton of Circle of Blue reports on a plan to reshape the administrative structure of the federal agency responsible for foreign aid. This re-shaping is prompting questions about how to embed U.S. goals for water access, sanitation, and ecosystems into the bureaucracy’s new hierarchy.

Water Security Events in South Africa

This week, the CEO Water Mandate and the National Business Initiative are holding two multi-stakeholder national dialogues on solutions to South Africa’s water challenges. Taking place in Johannesburg and Cape Town, the sessions will introduce companies to context-based water metrics and targets as a means as a means of helping businesses reduce their water risk and contribute to vital water security in South Africa.

June Multi-Benefit Stakeholder Convening in Southern California

 

On June 19th, the Pacific Institute hosted a meeting in Los Angeles with a group of diverse stakeholders to examine how the multiple benefits of water investment strategies can be incorporated into decision making.

Upcoming Multi-Benefits Stakeholder Convening in Minneapolis

Continuing to explore the integration of multi-benefit evaluation into investment decision making, on July 12th the Pacific Institute will host a meeting on the topic in Minneapolis. The event will follow the US Water Alliance One Water Summit 2018
