Community Strategies for Sustainability and Justice: Project 12898

Named after the number of the Presidential Executive Order on Environmental Justice, Project 12898 aims to reduce the impacts of trucks and trains in West County by promoting a community-driven vision for land use and economic development in West County neighborhoods and increasing the capacity of residents to meaningfully engage in transportation and land use planning decisions. Since March 2007, Project 12898 has furthered this goal through a number of activities, including surveying over 160 residents in English, Lao, and Spanish about how trucks and trains affect their health and quality of life, and convening four community workshops on freight transportation and land use. Project 12898 is a partnership between the Neighborhood House of North Richmond, the West County Toxics Coalition, the Community Health Initiative, Contra Costa Health Services, and the Pacific Institute.

Project 12898  was funded by the California Department of Transportation, the San Francisco Foundation, the California Endowment, and the California Wellness Foundation.
